Baritone James Newby, former BBC New Generation Artist and Rising Star of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, joins renowned pianist, Joseph Middleton for a concert of maritime inspired song.

James Newby is a former BBC New Generation Artist and Rising Star for the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He was nominated by the Barbican Hall for the European Concert Hall Organisation Rising Star scheme and will be presented by them in recitals throughout Europe in the 2022-23 season.

Chemistry 15: Emily Zobel Marshall, Harry Man and P for Phosphorus

Chemistry is back on Friday 27 September, with another night of poetry and spoken word, two brilliant headliners and our amazing open mic. This time round our headliners are Emily Zobel Marshall and Harry Man.

The events are themed on the elements of the periodic table, so this time it’s element number 15, which is P for Phosphorus. The theme is entirely optional, but we hope you might use it as a creative prompt to come up with some new work to reveal on the night.

Professor JRR Tolkien Centenary Lecture

JRR Tolkien taught in the Department of English at Leeds University from 1920 to 1925. He was made the first Professor of English Language in 1924.

During his time in Leeds Tolkien produced a revised version of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight with his colleague EV Gordon, worked on his translation of Beowulf which was not published until 2014 and developed his Lost Tales, the stories of the proto-Silmarillion which he had begun in the trenches of the Great War, besides setting up a curriculum for his departmental students which substantially remains the same to this day.
