Leeds-born composer, arranger and improviser; consummate soloist and generous collaborator; custodian of tradition and restless innovator, multi-award winning sitarist Jasdeep Singh Degun takes to the Howard Assembly Room stage once more, this time for classical story telling.
Promising to be a very memorable night, twice Grammy nominated Iarla Ó Lionáird – vocalist with critically-acclaimed band The Gloaming – joins forces with renowned pianist/composer Cormac McCarthy and acclaimed clarinet maestro Matthew Berrill. Expect an intimate evening of spellbinding song, performed with great delicacy by these superb musicians.
Dear diary…. I’ve been invited to the ultimate 90s sleepover-themed pyjama party!
We’ll start the evening with a movie (of course), so curl up with a cocktail for a screening of the unparalleled Shakespearean-teen-rom-com-classic, 10 Things I Hate About You.
After the film, twin choreographers Melissa and Martina Gumbs will teach us all a dance in iconic sleepover style. No experience needed. In fact, experience discouraged.
Join us for two magnificent chamber works by Mozart, which sit hand-in-hand with Opera North’s production of The Magic Flute, in which wind instruments lead the way.
‘Kegelstatt’, the name given to the Trio for clarinet, viola and piano, can be translated as ‘bowling alley’; could Mozart perhaps have penned it between games? Highlights of the Flute Quartet include a slow second movement in which a beautiful melody tinged with sadness is accompanied by pizzicato strings, before being interrupted by a finale full of sunny high spirits.
Join us for a showcase of performers supported through Opera North’s annual Resonance programme.
Rory A. Green (and band), Satnam Galsian, Ellen Beth Abdi with MeMe Gold & Seren Marimba, and Jonas Jones will each perform a 20-minute taster set of their latest work. The night will be hosted by singer-songwriter, composer, and storyteller Marco Woolf, who will also be performing.
Experience the power of breath and sound as you are guided on a deeply relaxing journey led by Opera North harpist Celine Saout with breathwork by trombonist Blair Sinclair.
A series of gentle, relaxing breathing techniques take you to a calm, meditative state, leaving you with the feeling of a deep, restful sleep. You will then be immersed in a sound bath, receiving the healing frequencies of the harp, Himalayan singing bowls, gong and quartz crystal bowls.
Six-piece Zimbabwean Tonga band Mokoomba’s music has rhythms that cascade with all the power of the waterfall from which their hometown of Victoria Falls takes its name.
That rhythm section, bass and two percussionists, are joined by a keyboardist balancing the fluid textures of thumb piano and more energetic electronic sounds, and a guitarist whose lithe and melodic playing frequently erupts into thrilling solos. They are led by charismatic frontman Mathias Muzuza, his always exuberant voice effortlessly moving between smooth and coarse tones.
