Chemistry returns to the Chemic on Friday 25 July, with another night of poetry and spoken word, not two but THREE brilliant headliners and our amazing open mic. This time round our headliners are gothic polymath Rosie Garland, and former Chemic hosts Mark & Gill Connors, appearing together as a double act.

The events are themed on the elements of the periodic table, so this time it’s element number 20, which is Ca for Calcium. The theme is entirely optional, but we hope you might use it as a creative prompt to come up with some new work to reveal on the night.

“From where We Stand” tells the stories of residents in diverse communities across Wakefield, Halifax and Middlesbrough and was made in collaboration with the University of Leeds as part of a large-scale research project examining community relations, economic deprivation and political disaffection.

The documentary, which is being billed as “a thoughtfully observed… authentic portrait of Northern England post-Brexit”, was created and directed by the award-winning, independent filmmaker Lucy Kaye.

St John's Church was originally built for the Nicholson family who lived at the Mansion in Roundhay Park. Although rather off the beaten track, the stories of some of the people buried there offer unusual insights into the history of North Leeds

Join local historians Wendy Grisedale and Val Crompton for a guided walk around the Adel Conservation Area.

This flat circular walk lasts about one and three-quarter hours and includes Adel Church and the Old Adel Rectory, York Gate House, Long Causeway and old cottages, old Adel Smithy and the old Adel School building. The walk will end at Adel Church which will be open for those who wish to visit between 13.45 and 16.00

Humphry Repton was the leading landscape gardener of his generation; discover the legacy of his work at Armley for Benjamin Gott.

Gotts Park Mansion was the home of Benjamin Gott, owner of Armley Mills and a leading figure in the Industrial Revolution. The Mansion is set in stunning parkland designed by Humphry Repton and is now the clubhouse for a golf course.
