Did you know your brain contains 400 miles of blood vessels? That’s like running from Thackray Museum to Land’s End! And while you’re reading this, your body’s already made 26 million red blood cells—impressive, right?
This May half-term is all about blood – what exactly is it, and what does it do? Take part in science shows, trails and craft activities, all free with your museum ticket.
Come and find out why the red stuff is the best stuff with a host of activities for all the family, and all free with your museum ticket.
Thackray Science Live
What do you get when you combine a set of crochet organs, some homemade inventions and two mad scientists? A Thackray Boffins show! Our resident science geeks will be presenting another whizzbang science show about the basics of blood.
If blood and gore ain’t your bag, fret not! This show is suitable for the whole family.
Make & Take Your Own Blood Bag Tote Bag
Check out the drip on these guys! Get creative with a guided craft session where you can draw on your very own tote-bag, inspired by our cartoon characters, the Plasma Pals.
Interactive Play Trail for Under-5s
Enjoy a trail play trail, pulsing with activities that sneak a little science into playtime:
Listen to heartbeats with stethoscopes.
Follow a circulation system circuit.
Add a droplet to our collective blood donation wall art and see how it grows throughout the week.
From medicine at sea to poisonous plants, Thackray Museum uses creativity and play to learn about a different medical theme every school holiday.
Ready to explore? Grab your annual pass today and enjoy a year’s worth of school holiday adventures for free.

Access to the museum
We want everyone to enjoy the museum. It is fully wheelchair and buggy accessible, entry is free for essential companions, and we welcome assistance dogs (and our team are more than happy to arrange a bowl of water for hard-working thirsty dogs - please just ask).
The museum offers quiet openings on the last Sunday of each month from 10am–11am when the lights will be up and the sounds down. You can download a copy of our gallery map, which includes some sensory information and other details here.
