Jan van Eyck is often said to have invented oil painting. The real story is far more interesting.

In this engaging illustrated talk, Chris Wood explores the world before and after Van Eyck: a period of experimentation, invention and rapidly developing artistic knowledge.

With their command of new materials and techniques, Van Eyck and his contemporaries might be seen as the technological innovators—or “tech bros”—of their age. Their discoveries made possible an astonishing new level of colour, light, texture and observed detail.

This is a story of artistic ambition, closely guarded knowledge, imitation and espionage—and of how technical innovation changed European painting and helped shape what we now recognise as Old Master technique.

The evening includes time for discussion and questions. No previous knowledge of art history is needed—just curiosity.
