Addressing the climate crisis through intervening in our food systems, Leeds’ Low Carbon Chinatown is an installation that combines data science and Chinese diasporic food culture.
This two-week installation at Kirkgate Market showcases an experimental food farm and data pop-up store, housing locally grown ingredients that will be used in a one off Supper Club hosted at Kirkgate Market on Friday 15 November, 6.30–8.30pm.
Visitors are invited to learn about the environmental impact of food systems and explore different ingredients, cooking techniques and food sources that, in combination, still retain a core essence of Chinese food culture.
About
Leeds' Low Carbon Chinatown is part of Compass Festival, a whole month of interactive art across Leeds, unfolding 1–30 November 2024.
Low Carbon Chinatown is an ongoing project that uses Chinese food culture in the UK as a starting point due its popularity and misperceptions around its environmental impact. Through collaboration with UK-based East and Southeast Asian migrant communities, Ling Tan works to develop new ‘authentic’ sustainable ways of producing, sourcing and consuming food that evokes joy and memories using science, art and technology.
Trained as an architect, Ling Tan is a designer, artist, and creative technologist known for her work on social engagement, urban data science, and environmental politics. Her work challenges the ways people interact with their built environments, using technology as a catalyst for dialogue and action.
