Part of Sunny Bank Mills Print Festival 2025.
In this workshop we will make a show-stopping journal, using the traditional bookmaking pamphlet stitch technique to bind multiple signatures into a faux leather wrap around cover and create a decorative spine in the process. Using provided templates and specialist equipment, we’ll plan the stitching for a decorative pattern on the spine; cut and collate our fabric and paper signatures; then stitch them together to create a satisfyingly chunky book, ideal for sketching, collecting and travelling.
This workshop is an intensive introduction to bookmaking, suitable for those with little to no bookmaking experience and would like to know how to get started. You will be taken through how to use basic book making equipment, shown how to use it safely and effectively, be guided step-by-step, and shown tips and tricks to get the best out of your bookmaking projects.
You will take away your own hand-bound book, blank templates and guidance for making more books like this in the future. Once you know the process, the possibilities for journal making are endless!
Please be mindful that bookmaking requires a moderate degree of hand dexterity, an eye for accuracy, and confidence in crafting (e.g. using a craft knife, needle and thread).
Suitable for ages `16+. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Artist Bio:
Hi I'm Zoe Platt, founder of Short & Few, artist educator and graphics practitioner. My education and training background is in graphic design and typography, and over time my practice has become more process-driven, with a hands-on and analogue approach to image-making. Alongside my creative engagement workshops and freelance graphic design practice, I am a qualified art and design tutor in the lifelong learning sector, with close to ten years’ experience teaching a range of subjects across fine art, textiles and graphic communication. I am at my best when I am doing creative things - whether this is making books or prints, or working with others and supporting them to find their best creative selves.
My mission is to: INSPIRE, EMPOWER & ENGAGE
I am a big believer in learning by doing and making mistakes as a form of enquiry, an ethos which underpins my teaching. I love the buzz of seeing what people make when they are in their flow state and seeing where the process is taking them. I want to inspire people to develop a curiosity for what the arts can be about for them, and provide opportunities and learning experiences to get started and keep going.
