The Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) programme at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance is a nationally recognised extra-curricular training programme for talented young dancers aged 13–16 who are passionate about pursuing dance at a high level.
Part of the Department for Education’s National Centres for Advanced Training (CATs) dance scheme, the programme is designed to help young people prepare for full-time professional dance training at conservatoire or university level. The NSCD CAT is recognised by leading higher and further education dance providers across the UK and supports students in developing the artistic, technical and creative skills required for progression into the dance industry.
The programme is open to young people with potential, ambition and commitment. No formal qualifications or extensive dance experience are required — we are looking for young dancers who demonstrate passion, curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm for movement and performance.
Students accepted onto the programme train weekly alongside their school education and continue their development through to the age of 18 (or 21 in exceptional circumstances). Training includes:
• Contemporary Technique
• Ballet Technique
• Creative Practice and Choreography
• Performance Skills
• Dancers’ Health and Wellbeing
• Cultural and Artistic Development
CAT students work with experienced tutors, professional choreographers, visiting artists and dance companies, developing their confidence, versatility and artistic voice in a supportive and inspiring environment.
Weekly training includes:
• Monday evening Ballet classes
• Wednesday evening Contemporary classes
• Saturday daytime training including multiple practical and creative sessions
Students also take part in intensive training weeks during the Easter and Summer holidays, alongside performances, workshops, theatre trips and artist-led activities throughout the year.
The programme focuses not only on technical excellence, but also on creativity, collaboration, resilience and individual progression. Students receive ongoing feedback and mentoring through tutorials, written feedback and personalised development plans.
Entry to the programme is by audition. Auditions are designed to be welcoming and encouraging, giving young people the opportunity to explore movement, creativity and performance in a supportive atmosphere. We also offer Audition Preparation Workshops to help students understand the process, build confidence and prepare practically for the experience.
Financial support is available through the government-funded Music and Dance Scheme (MDS), helping to make high-quality dance training accessible regardless of financial background. Means-tested grants are available to support tuition costs for eligible families.
If you are a young person who loves to move, create and perform — and are excited by the possibility of developing your dance training further — we would love to meet you at our auditions.
