The Tenebrae Responsories was the most important liturgical ceremony of Holy Week and illuminated the darkness of the churches during Holy Wednesday, Thursday and Good Friday in Spain.
It was performed by many composers such as Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), one of the most famous composers of sacred music of the late Renaissance. The repertoire of the Spanish composer, who was also a priest, choir director and organist, is exclusively religious, and the music composed for this liturgy is considered to be one of the great representations of Spanish Renaissance polyphony.
