Leeds was a small town until the late eighteenth century. Musical life expanded and became more ambitious as new venues opened, opportunities for musical studies expanded, and high-calibre performers were attracted to perform here. As one of the top UK cities, Leeds has hosted many of the world’s greatest violinists and local players have made careers at national and international level.
See some of the places in Leeds city centre, apart from venues featuring in the Red Violin Festival, that have been associated with violinists, performances and makers.
You’ll have headphones to listen to some passages of music relevant to the theme.
Our pace will be Andante; the music will be varied in pace and style. The walk is wheelchair accessible.
Starting outside Leeds City Museum, Millennium Square, and finishing in the heart of the city close to places where you can find a wide choice of options for refreshment.
Red Violin Festival runs 14-19 October, in partnership with Leeds International Concert Season, Leeds Conservatoire, Opera North In Harmony, University of Leeds, South Asian Arts, Sinfonia of Leeds, ArtForms and Everyman Cinema, with premières featuring violinists of all ages and a wide range of music, exhibitions, talks and film.
