Ray & Lizspawned from 1996 series of photographs. Richard Billingham took pictures of his parents in their squalid flat – a tattooed woman in floral dresses, Liz, and her husband Ray, mixing alcoholic drinks. The renowned photographer adapted his previous work into a full-length feature – dimly-lit, hopeless film that cages its complex protagonists in the hell that was created outside their control.

Ray & Liz invokes both aversion and pity for Richard Billingham’s parents. It seems that in violence, neglect and alcohol abuse lies the only escape in this dysfunctional family, but even in the worst of situations the director sometimes manages to find humour or certain beauty.
