Explore a range of exciting portrait processes on this five-week course. During the course you will explore and be guided through a variety of techniques for representing the portrait including drawing, monoprint and painting. You’ll explore chiaroscuro in both drawing and monoprinting, will add decorative elements to your prints and learn how to observe and create accurate facial proportions.
There will also be an emphasis on colour mixing to create a painted portrait in acrylics. You’ll learn how to use oil based printmaking inks and our etching presses to create monoprinted works in addition to drawings and paintings.
The course is suitable for absolute beginners or those wishing to build upon previous experience in monoprint or colour mixing for portrait painting. The course follows a step by step approach in which you will be offered guidance and instruction at every level.

Access
Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
