"With my films you’re aware of every second passing through your body."
Pervert Pictures presents Structuring S**: A screening of Chantal Akerman's Je, Tu, Il, Elle (1974) preceded by a selection of artists' moving image works exploring desire and the body and followed by a guided discussion.
By doing Pervert Pictures I want to encourage audiences to feel uncomfortable things in a public setting: sadness, fear, disgust, arousal; but there's another uncomfortable feeling I haven't mentioned before: boredom. Films during which we really feel the passage of time and are forced to sit with static or repetitive images, pervert the mainstream tradition of narrative films. Hitchcock said "drama is life with the dull bits cut out" and Chantal Akerman said "so what?". Je, Tu, Il, Elle follows a young woman, played by Akerman herself, in a series of lonely scenes, culminating in one of cinema's first explicit lesbian s** scenes.
The films will be followed by a loosely guided discussion about the films, their relationship with each other and our feelings while watching them, which I encourage you to join - no prior knowledge needed!
I planned this event to (sort of) coincide with Hyde Park Picture House's screening of Akerman's seminal work Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles on 23rd March and I would encourage you to attend!
Details about the short films will be presented in accompanying programme notes, to be revealed on the evening.
