KP Culver is an interdisciplinary artist, attending to how collective and personal narratives are shaped, distorted, and reimagined over time. This approach is deeply informed by an interest in how we come to know and sense the world through embodied practices. Whether through touch, voice, or shared acts of noticing works seek out, and create intimate encounters that challenge extractive or binary logics.
Pat Riot is a new exhibition by KP Culver that explores performance and belonging through photography, moving image and material transformation. Playing on the word patriot, the exhibition asks what it means to gather not through nations or borders, but through creativity and shared acts of imagination. At the centre of the exhibition is an enlarged photograph of Culver's nan, Pat, taken by the artist as a child. Covered in face paint, Pat appears both familiar and uncanny, transformed on a monumental scale to welcome us into the space.
Accompanying works in the space draw on wider histories of performance, whilst remembering Pat’s garden as an early site of play, imagination and becoming. Chroma green surfaces become a threshold where the body can shift and transform. The green recalls both the artificial space of image production and the pictorial "green" of landscapes and pastoral myths.
To coincide with the exhibition Culver has a limited-edition T-shirt and a screening night in October, to be announced, will further expand the exhibition's themes.
