Overtime Art Club O2W Special - Conversations with Clay
Craft
Workshop
Event organiser:
Sunny Bank Mills

For our Spring sessions of Overtime Art Club, we are running a series of Ones to Watch specials, getting to know some of our exhibitors a little better and learning new skills in a relaxed setting! We are keen to help our Ones to Watch artists develop other areas of their careers outside of Gallery walls, and find many artists and makers diversify their practive trough teaching workshops.

During this workshop, we will be hand-building with clay to form vessels, to get a feel for the nature of the material and its possibilities.

You will be encouraged to experiment and work intuitively with the material, with every mistake or imperfection a physical manifestation of the mutual conversation between hand, tools and clay. You will also get an opportunity to decorate with some of the artist’s wild clay slips.

You will be given the opportunity to submit one piece at the end of the session for the artist to take away to fire and glaze for the participants to collect from Sunny Bank at a later stage.

You will become collaborators in Livia’s ongoing socially engaged practice, that celebrates the community and sharing aspect of working in ceramics.

About the artist

Livia Garrod is in her final year of study in Fine Art at the University of Leeds. Originally from the Suffolk coast, her work is constantly informed and influenced by this landscape. As well as Leeds, where the artist has plans to settle and continue to build an identity within the creative community of the city after finishing her studies.

Her work explores the tension between intellectuality or knowledge and intuition or know-how towards materials. The visceral quality of wild clay orders an instinctual material understanding, developed in conversation with the spontaneous behaviour of the clay.

You can view Livia's work within the Gallery until 21st April.

Please note - these sessions are suitable for anyone aged 18+
