Newen Afrobeat is the Chilean band who pioneered the Afrobeat genre in the country, continuing the legacy of the Nigerian pioneers Fela Kuti and Tony Allen but with an added Latin American twist.
With 15 years in the gamey, they have been playing across the world music, jazz and global afrobeat music scenes worldwide with outstanding appearances in important events such as WOMAD UK, WOMEX, Felabration Nigeria (Lagos), Montreal Jazz Festival, and appearances in more than 20 countries in Latin America, North America, Africa and Europe.
With 5 studio albums featuring both their original music and Nigerian afrobeat classics, plus their EP's entitled "Newen Plays Fela", where they remiagined some of Fela Kuti's classics such as "Opposite People" (14 million views make it the most viewed afrobeat video in the world on YouTube), Newen has earned the respect of many of the pioneers of Afrobeat. This led to collaborations and friendships with legends of the genre such as Tony Allen, Femi Kuti, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Seun Kuti, Oghene Kologbo and Dele Sosimi to name a few.
Today, Newen Afrobeat brings a unique sound to the genre with a cultural integration between Latin America and Africa without ever leaving aside the social message that characterizes the music via it's lyrics.
Support on the night comes from Leeds DJ Muddy Brown (Sela Bar) who will be playing an all vinyl set of classic and new Pan-African musical selections.
