Learn about glazes in this practical course focused on mixing your own brushing glazes from raw materials. By the end of the course, you'll have at least five glazes to use, along with the knowledge and experience to mix more independently.
Led by our very own glaze guru Chris Crawford, you will cover the basics of ceramic glaze science and become familiar with Glazy.org - a valuable resource for glaze research and documentation. You'll learn the logic behind Sunken Studio’s glaze system and how to mix your own glazes safely and consistently. Together you’ll explore how to apply this knowledge to making both brushing and dipping glazes for various applications.
Each session is divided into 50% theory and discussion, and 50% practical glaze-making.

Glaze Club: Is for those who have completed Make a Glaze Part 1. It provides a space and support to explore and experiment with new glazes, troubleshoot challenges and exchange ideas with other studio members. This ongoing programme fosters a community of learning and experimentation. Raw materials are available on a pay-per-use basis.
Non-members who complete Make a Glaze are invited to join a complimentary Glaze Club session, held 5–6pm on the Tuesday following your final class.
Make a Glaze (Part 2): Build on the foundations from Part 1 by learning how to further modify and adapt your glaze recipes. You’ll be introduced to advanced volumetric blending techniques, allowing you to quickly develop a wide range of new glazes. Key topics include: Unity Molecular Formula (UMF) and Stull Chart helping you predict glaze behaviour without firing.
Our Glaze Courses are designed for those interested in the science and application of glazes. These courses are perfect for makers who want to explore colour, surface, and functionality - whether aesthetically or technically.

3-Day Courses: An intensive version, delivered over three consecutive days.

The studio is a single story building with a bright yellow door and dark grey window frames. We are next door to Duke Makes.
Access is at street level. There are managed car parks nearby. On street parking is limited - please allow plenty of time. The studio is a 10 minute walk from the City Centre, easily accessed by public transport & you can get the water taxi from Leeds Train Station to Leeds Dock. The studio is a short walk from Leeds Dock, Sheaf St. (Duke Studios), The Tetley & The Royal Armouries.
Please allow plenty of time for parking, Parking can be tricky, we recommend:
Leeds Dock Car Park (9 min walk). Weekdays are much busier and on-street parking is competitive.
