Catherine Strachan grew up in Aberdeen, where she benefited from a superb start to her musical education thanks to the local authority music service and local youth orchestras. Catherine studied modern and baroque cello performance with Myra Chahin and Alison McGillivray at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (formerly RSAMD), and followed this with an MA in baroque performance practice at the University of York.
Catherine is now based in York, where she enjoys a varied career as a freelance cellist and string teacher. She has recently performed with The Brigantes Orchestra, The 18th Century Sinfonia and Late Music Ensemble. Catherine also plays regularly with various local ensembles including The Ebor Quartet, Leeds Baroque, Leodis Consort and York Opera. Recent concerto performances include the Beethoven Triple with Banbury Chamber Orchestra in 2023.
Upcoming projects for 2025 so far include cello recitals in York and Chester, and Catherine will also be the baroque cello tutor at HISS (Historically Informed Summer School) in Beverley in August 2025.
Catherine will be accompanied by David Hammond.
David Hammond grew up in Oxfordshire before completing his music degree in York. During a successful career as a professional pianist, he has performed at the cathedrals of Manchester, Carlisle, Lincoln and Wakefield as well as hosting Javanese Gamelan workshops at a community group in York!
