WHAT IS JAM ON TOAST?
jam is a community centred dance event for people of all abilities. Our structure usually maintains the same, with a 1hr 30min movement workshop of any variety and we then lead into our jam. We make a cypher (circle) which people can fall in and out of - to dance, together or solo. This is accompanied by live musicians who are there to soundtrack the dancers, and both can co-improvise together to build an ongoing score.
Who is teaching?
Orla Collier (she/her) is a freelance dance artist, physical theatre practitioner and life model. She is from Cumbria and based in Leeds. She trained at Rambert School and NSCD and has since worked in a variety of interdisciplinary performance projects, including her own solo works. Orla’s practice focuses on using her body to express feelings or experiences that can otherwise be difficult to express or accept.
What to expect?
In this workshop, you can expect an introspective, juicy, research-y session. We’ll start off with a simple warm up, moving into guided improvisations, and finishing off by learning a set piece of choreography. The guided movement improvisations will introduce you to various textures, imagery, and emotions which are in the final phrase, allowing you to feel them for yourself and relate it to the way you move. The choreography is a solo movement piece created by Orla and is physically rich with elements of story.
The workshop is open for all levels, please get in touch if you have any questions!
