From historic fairs and community feasts to colourful carnival processions, discover how people across Leeds have come together to celebrate over the centuries.
Join staff from Leeds Libraries’ Heritage and Research team for an informal talk exploring the history of Leeds carnivals, fairs and feasts, using fascinating items from the City Library’s unique collections.
We’ll also bring the story closer to home, exploring Bramley’s own carnival traditions. For generations, the annual procession along Town Street brought the community together, with colourful floats, marching bands, dancers and local groups filling the streets with music and celebration. Discover how these events became an important part of Bramley’s local identity and what they can tell us about the people, places and traditions that have shaped the area.
Following the talk, you’ll have the chance to get up close to historic objects in a guided treasure-handling session, offering a hands-on way to explore Leeds rich history of public celebrations.
Whether you have memories of Bramley Carnival, are curious about local history or simply love discovering the stories behind the places we call home, come along and explore the celebrations that have brought communities together.
Part of the Leeds Libraries’ Leeds400 programme.
This event is also part of #morethanapool, our National Lottery Heritage Fund-supported project celebrating the history, stories and community connections of Bramley Baths.
