A Night In Havana returns to the Howard Assembly Room for a Leeds Jazz Festival special, curated by DJ Lubi to bring the sound and movement of Cuba to Leeds. The evening features a live performance from Eliane Correa & La Evolución, a high-energy nine-piece orchestra composed of leading Cuban and Latin musicians based in the UK.
Led by pianist and composer Eliane Correa, the ensemble performs a contemporary take on timba - a modern Cuban genre that evolves traditional son Cubano with elements of funk, jazz, and Afro-Cuban folklore. Correa, who has worked as a musical director for artists such as Mayito Rivera and tours as a soloist with Hans Zimmer, brings a perspective to the genre that highlights female voices within a majority-Cuban line-up.
The event includes an early-evening Cuban salsa dance class led by resident teachers Yersin and Dahi, followed by the live performance and a DJ after-party playing classic and contemporary son Cubano, timba, and salsa.
