Giles Newman - Launch
Exhibition
Visual Arts

We kick off the year with Giles Newman, a unique talent, who makes extraordinarily beautiful and elegant sculptures from sustainably sourced wood. Come and join us from lunchtime until close on Sunday 1st February for the launch of his exhibition with us.

Giles is a woodcarver and sculptor whose work has earned an international following for its intricate detail, deep connection to nature, and quiet philosophical depth. He grew up in woodlands and works exclusively with naturally fallen and sustainably sourced wood, hand-carving each piece. His one-off carvings are valued for their thoughtful engagement with nature, climate and the human condition.

Teaching himself how to work with axe and knife he has created one-of-a-kind spoon carvings that sought to elevate and celebrate the mundane and commonplace into an art form whilst eschewing the conventions of this heritage craft.

Inspired by the flora and fauna whilst working in his small, family-owned woodland and by wider issues, including climate change, biodiversity loss, politics, social inequality and injustice, his work naturally evolved beyond spoons into larger sculptural works. His abstract pieces explore emotional and physical responses to the human condition, whilst still reflecting his lifelong reverence for nature’s forms and rhythms.
