Inspired by the current British Library and Leeds Libraries exhibition, Voice of the Fans, this panel event features scholars whose research interests focus on issues in football fan culture.
Participants include Professor Richard Haynes, author of The Football Imagination: The Rise of Football Fanzine Culture, together with current PhD students Cameron Huggett (British Library/Teesside University) and Aurélien Gerard (Sorbonne University).
Our speakers will particularly focus on the role of fanzines in combating prejudice and discrimination, including the influence of titles such as Marching Altogether - an important Leeds United fanzine of the 1980s.
Part of Voice of the Fans, an exhibition co-produced by the British Library and Leeds Libraries, which explores over 60 years of fan-made media from their collections that has defined the beautiful game. At Leeds Central Library from 9 May to 10 August, with a smaller display touring to Leeds branch libraries throughout autumn/winter 2025.
