Credited with introducing reggae to the wider world this seminal Jamaican movie made in 1972 is loosely based on a true story – singer Ivanhoe Martin played by Jimmy Cliff moves to Kingston from the country, in hope of finding success but instead comes up against poverty, corrupt producers and crime. While he becomes a folk hero and outlaw the songs become the hits they always deserved to be.
Review: The Guardian: ‘This crime drama of a headstrong singer shooting for his chance of success is as raw and energetic as its reggae soundtrack’
