Leeds Guild of Singers invites you to immerse yourself in an evening of beautiful choral music. At the heart of our Lent concert entitled “Father in the Heavens” is Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir, a work of astonishing spiritual intensity, complemented by other radiant compositions for multiple voices.
Martin’s Mass is a masterpiece of the choral repertoire, yet one that remained a private expression of faith for many years. Composed in the 1920s but withheld from public performance until 1963, this luminous work is an intimate dialogue between the soul and the divine. The Swiss composer weaves an intricate tapestry of sound, intertwining two choirs to create shimmering harmonies and a sense of celestial vastness. At moments, the music is hushed and searching; at others, it surges with exultant power.
The programme also features works by Vaughan Williams, Bairstow, Holst, Whitacre, Schumann & Chesnokov, that explore the expressive potential of multiple voices. St Chad's Church, with its warm acoustics and reverent atmosphere, provides the perfect setting: the interplay of voices will envelop you in waves of sound that invite contemplation and renewal. Whether you are drawn to the sheer beauty of choral singing or searching for a moment of reflection in a busy world, this concert offers a chance to be transported by music’s transformative power.
