Join artist Niamh Phillips for our four-week Ceramics course at Northlight Arts Centre in Chapel Allerton, Leeds.
Designed for both beginners and those looking to develop existing skills, this hands-on ceramics course explores creative approaches to handbuilding using clay, coloured slips and surface decoration techniques in a relaxed studio environment.
Across the course, participants will learn how to shape, construct and refine ceramic forms while experimenting with texture, colour and composition. Sessions encourage curiosity and playfulness alongside practical skill-building, offering plenty of opportunity to develop personal ideas and create unique finished pieces.
Led by artist and tutor Niamh Phillips, the course combines guided demonstrations with individual support, helping participants build confidence with clay at their own pace. Whether you arrive with a clear project in mind or simply a curiosity about ceramics, you’ll be supported to explore materials and techniques in an encouraging, non-judgemental atmosphere.
Classes take place at Northlight — an independent arts centre known for its friendly environment and high-quality artist-led workshops. Group sizes are kept manageable to ensure time for conversation, experimentation and individual guidance throughout the course.
All materials, glazing and firing are included.
Participants are free to bring sketchbooks, reference images or even Pinterest boards to help inspire ideas and develop their own creative direction.
