Love’s young dream turned cold.
Tchaikovsky's heart-breaking coming-of-age opera is brought to life in a new production set against the backdrop of changing 1980s Russia.
When tender young Tatyana falls hopelessly in love with the cynical Eugene Onegin, her naive affection is casually turned away. Years later, as social and political tides shift around them, their paths cross once more. But with Tatyana now married, Onegin's sudden realisation of his true feelings comes too late for them both.
Tchaikovsky’s greatest opera, based on the classic novel by Pushkin, a tragic story of love, regret and missed opportunities. The emotional depth and sweeping melodies of Tchaikovsky's music are performed live by the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North.
Performed in Russian with English subtitles, the story remains completely accessible. Whether you are a regular opera-goer or discovering the art form for the first time, this production offers a powerful mix of climactic drama and bittersweet romance that plays out on-stage and in the music.
An Opera North co-production with Irish National Opera and Opera Queensland.
