Arts of Kindness is a creative wellbeing session for over-60s, designed to bring older people together in a warm, welcoming environment to celebrate kindness, connection and community. Taking place at Jamaica House, Leeds, the session invites participants to spend a gentle afternoon painting a portrait of someone who has shown them care, support or kindness in their lives - whether that is a neighbour, family member, friend, carer, nurse or community member.
The project is rooted in the belief that creativity can support wellbeing, reduce isolation and strengthen intergenerational connections. Many older people carry rich life stories and deep relationships of gratitude, but do not always have opportunities to express them in a shared and creative way. This session offers a positive, relaxed space where people can reflect on those relationships while enjoying painting, conversation and good company.
The activity is designed to be accessible to everyone, regardless of artistic experience. All materials will be provided, along with free refreshments, and the atmosphere will be calm, friendly and supportive. The focus is not on technical skill, but on personal expression, appreciation and joy. Participants will be encouraged to create a portrait that can be kept or gifted as a meaningful surprise to someone they value.
Arts of Kindness also supports wider community aims by welcoming older people into Jamaica House, strengthening social ties and affirming the value of elders in the life of the community. By creating a space where people can meet, share stories and celebrate kindness, the session contributes to wellbeing, confidence and a sense of belonging.
The project is especially timely for older adults who may experience loneliness, reduced social contact or limited access to creative activities. Through a simple but meaningful artistic experience, it aims to lift spirits, encourage conversation and create a memorable shared experience for attendees.
This event is funded by Tesco Stronger Starts and YPIP.
