Learning from our past, reimagining our future.

This summer, The World Reimagined will see trails of over 100 huge globes in seven cities across the UK from 13 August – 31 October 2022.

Join us on a journey of discovery around the city centre to take in 10 huge globes which explore the diversity of the city and reimagine our past, present and future. There will be a walking trail of globes around Leeds city centre, with one globe in Chapeltown. The final globe will be on the site designated for a new world class artwork by Yinka Shonibare, to be unveiled as part of the Leeds 2023 Year of Culture.

The trail is an invitation to reimagine a future Leeds and a future world where everyone’s diversity and cultural heritage is recognised and celebrated. Leeds has a unique story to tell, as a culturally vibrant city, enriched by its diversity and the cultural heritage of all its citizens.

The globes have been created by a mix of undiscovered and established artists to form a thought-provoking trail, bringing to life the reality and impact of the slave trade through themes including ‘Mother Africa’, ‘The Reality of Being Enslaved’, ‘Still We Rise’ and ‘Expanding Soul’. It aims to transform how we understand the Transatlantic slave trade and its impact on all of us.

This is one of the largest cultural education projects for racial justice the UK has seen. The World Reimagined will inspire pride in what it means to be Black and British and help us all better understand what it means to be British.

The artists in Leeds include Larry Amponsah, Marcia Brown, Rosanna Gammon, Gherdai Hassell, Mussarat Rahman, Linnet Panashe Rubaya, Herfa Thompson, Emmanuel Unaji and Rodell Warner.

The trails are part of a broader learning and community programme, with schools and community groups from across Leeds and Yorkshire taking part with each school creating their own mini globe to be displayed in community hubs across the city. Together, we can learn from our past, understand our history and reimagine our future, creating a world that is one rooted in unity and diversity.

Come and take part in this journey of discovery.

Details of the The World Reimagined trail and places where you can see the mini school globes will be announced shortly.
