Short Film: Marching On Together
Earlier this year I wrote a play called Marching On Together, which focused on the fall of the Leeds United hooligan scene set against the backdrop of the miners strike. It was set over the 1984/5 football season, which had the highest number of arrests for football related violence and was also a season which culminated in tragedy, with the Valley Parade fire in Bradford. It was a year which signified a great deal of change, particularly for small Yorkshire mining towns which were now becoming unrecognisable.
The play embarked on a successful London run yet, for me, I always knew that the piece would resonate best with a Leeds audience hence the reason I was adamant to bring it to my home city. Therefore, during the first week of March this year, we toured Marching On Together to working mens clubs across Leeds and performed the piece to audiences, for free, who may not normally receive the opportunity to see theatre.
I hope you can see from the fim that the reaction we received was extraordinary, to see the piece resonate with so many people was nothing short of inspiring for me as a writer. I also want to say a massive thanks to Leeds Inspired, Arts Council England, Kickstarter and, perhaps most importantly, the people of Leeds who came to see the show - I hope you enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you.
