Leeds Summer Solstice Festival 2026: An Evening of Celestial Music
South Asian Arts-uk (SAA-uk) proudly marks the 15th anniversary of its flagship Leeds Summer Solstice Festival with its most expansive and immersive edition to date, An Evening of Celestial Music, taking place on Sunday 21st June 2026 at the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds.
Rooted in the rhythms of nature, astronomy, and the enduring relationship between sound and time, the festival has evolved into a distinctive cultural moment in Leeds’ artistic calendar. Each year, it brings South Asian classical traditions into dialogue with listening, reflection, and shared experience beneath the longest day of the year.
This landmark anniversary edition centres on the theme of Voice & Vocals, exploring how Indian classical music expresses cycles of time, atmosphere, emotion, and season through the human voice. With over 300 years of South Asian presence woven into the cultural history of Leeds, the festival continues to honour both continuity and renewal — creating a space where heritage, sound, and contemporary audiences meet.
Afternoon Salon
Raag, Taal & Time: Modal Music and the Cycles of the Day, 3pm – 4pm
The festival opens with an intimate and thought-provoking salon exploring how Hindustani classical music aligns with the changing moods of the day — from dawn and dusk to the luminous atmosphere of a solstice evening. Audiences will be invited into a deeper understanding of Raag as a living relationship between sound, nature, and time.
