I Know A Place - championing and advocating for increased diversity in the music industry
Award-winning Leeds music development organisation Come Play With Me will host their I Know A Place conference this month, bringing together locally and nationally influential music industry figures to Leeds for an unmissable event.
Following the successful launch of a London-based edition of the long-running event in October 2023, the ninth I Know A Place will take over the iconic Brudenell Social Club with a PAYF event on 19 January 2024 for a full day of workshops, networking, live showcases and more.
Created to champion and advocate for increased diversity in the music industry, I Know A Place supports those looking to build their careers on all sides of the industry. Highlights from this years programme include a keynote from Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin and Leeds North-West MP Alex Sobel, as well as ‘On The Record’ - a workshop on music journalism featuring DIY Magazine Managing Editor Sarah Jamieson and leading Leeds-based music journalist Jenessa Williams (The Guardian, NME, DIY) and a ‘Demo Listening Party’ where emerging artists from the North can get feedback from established industry professionals, including Eva Davies (Label Manager at CPWM Records), Scott Lewis (Label Manager at EMI North and George O’Brien (Director of Creative Sync at Universal Music Publishing)
Other panels include ‘STRIKE! The Power of a Union’ with Chardine Taylor-Stone and Amardeep Singh Dhillon and a live music panel led by Music Venues Trust’s Bev Whitrick.
With live music at its heart, CPWM will host two gigs as part of CPWM including a launch-party hosted in association with Leeds promoter ‘Your Name Here’ for a free-entry show featuring Elisabeth Elektra, Hinata and more. Iconic DIY label Alcopop! will provide the IKAP after-party with a line-up of some of the most exciting new artists around in the form of Belfast’s Problem Patterns, Manchester’s Loose Articles and Leeds’ own FigbyFour.
The eighth I Know A Place follows a significant year for the organisation that included the launch of CPWM Records publishing arm, partnership with EMI North and a raft of new signings, as well as the re-launch of their long-running magazine, new partnerships with the likes of Musicians Union, Ivors Academy, EMI North, Universal Music Publishing, Featured Artists Coalition and their first London based events and activity.
