Find the Words
Has creative writing ever helped you process a diagnosis, a period of illness or the experience of caring for someone?
If you or someone you love is living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) or another chronic condition, you'll know how hard it can be to put the experience into words.
Dr Georgi Gill, poet, researcher and MS patient, is inviting you to a free poeMS workshop on Thursday 25 June to explore what poetry can do instead.
What is the poeMS workshop?
poeMS, a name that brings together poetry and MS, is a two-hour creative writing workshop organised by the Centre for Music, Text and Cultures in Leeds. Participants will read and discuss poetry written by someone living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), then write their own in response. No poetry experience is required.
Who is it for?
• People living with MS or another chronic health condition
• Carers and loved ones of someone with a chronic illness
• Anyone curious about how creative writing can give voice to health experiences
About Dr Georgi Gill
Diagnosed with MS in 2003, Georgi has spent years researching how poetry supports people with neurological conditions, most recently through her project Poems on my Mind, developed as a Public Engagement Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh. Her debut poetry collection Limbo was shortlisted for Scotland's National Book Awards' Best First Book of the Year in 2022.
The poeMS workshop will take place on Thursday 25 June 2026, 2pm - 4pm, at The Big Core, Thackray Museum of Medicine, 141 Beckett St, Leeds, LS9 7LN. It will be a PAYF workshop with free tickets available, and refreshments will be provided. Register here.
