Enter the Release Your Inner Rebel Selfie Competition!
The brand new #RebelSelves Selfie App, designed to make selfies glitchy and fun, is now live. Created by artist Charlotte Roe, from Huddersfield, and Dr. Dawn Woolley, an artist and research fellow at Leeds Arts University.
Dawn says, "I have been interested in self-portraits and selfies for a long time, and in 2017 one of my self-portraits – The Substitute (holiday) won the Saatchi Gallery selfie competition and was named the world's best selfie by GQ magazine.
"In my research job I look at the impact of social networking sites and selfies on self-esteem and body image. I found that sharing and commenting on selfies creates online communities, enabling self-esteem building support. However, there is also an expectation that people’s selfies will try to reproduce gender and other beauty ideals."
To celebrate the app's launch, Dawn is launching the Release Your Inner Rebel Selfie Competition, looking out for the most creative and unconventional selfies produced using the app. She wants to find out how weird you can make yours.
All you need to do to enter is visit the app at www.rebelselves.com, upload a selfie from your phone, play around with all the effects and stickers in the app. When you are happy with your Rebel Selfie, save it and share it in the gallery. Don’t forget to include an email or Instagram account if you want to be in the running for a prize!
The prizes on offer include a £100 Amazon voucher from Leeds Arts University, a £50 Voucher for Take It Easy Photo Lab, a £40 Curator Space Artist subscription and a copy of the brand new book MirrorMirror: The Reflective Surface in Contemporary Art by Dr Michael Petry – who is also one of the judges. You will also have a chance to be part of a public exhibition of shortlisted entries that will be displayed on advertising posters around Leeds city centre, thanks to sponsorship by Pop Art Media Group.
The entries will also be viewed by an expert panel of judges including: Maya Fuhr, a fashion photographer and philanthropist based in LA; Dr. Michael Petry, an artist, author, and director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) London; Jung Me Chai, a gallerist and founder of Diskurs Berlin; Mindy Lee an artist and curator of Blyth Gallery, London and Matthew Pendergast, a curator and deputy director of Castlefield Gallery, Manchester.
