Call Out - Chapeltown Photographer-In-Residence
Leeds Caribbean & African Centre (LCAC), supported by Lens Lab Project, with funding from Historic England, are looking for a photographer/lens-based artist to create a new body of work in Chapeltown, Leeds.
Download the full brief here.
The chosen photographer will ideally be someone with a connection to Chapeltown and/or the Caribbean and African community, with some experience/understanding of socially engaged practice. The candidate will ideally have a portfolio of work that includes social documentary and (for example) portraiture, architectural, documentary or street photography, as well as events photography.
The project will coincide with key dates and festivals for the community, culminating in a celebration of the work during Black History Month in October 2024.
A selection of this new work will be added to the Historic England Archive, where it will be accessible for future generations.
Following the discovery of a set of images in the Historic England Archive from an event at Leeds West Indian Centre in 1983 (now known as LCAC), this exciting residency opportunity seeks to create opportunities for the Chapeltown Caribbean and African community to celebrate 40 years of the centre, and examine heritage through the lens of photography.
The 1983 images can be viewed here.
Applications are encouraged from the Chapeltown community as well as wider Caribbean and/or African communities and other under represented groups within the creative industries. This opportunity is designed as a development-led residency, therefore applications are also encouraged from those wishing to develop their practice further in the relevant areas.
