Everything is going to be Super!

Art

We are giddy to announce that we are helping to bring a splash of fun and colour to Leeds Train Station this autumn. We’ve been beavering away with the brilliant Network Rail team and with the eagle eyes of design from Colours May Vary to commission a new artwork for the pedestrian footbridge inside the station.

The new work SuperLeeds is by artist Supermundane (though apparently his mum insists on calling him Rob). Supermundane is an illustrator and designer whose work has been published and exhibited worldwide. He has previously created artwork for magazines and books including Penguin, Wallpaper*, The Independent on Sunday, Little White Lies and Anorak. His murals have graced the walls of Frankfurt Museum of Modern Art, Havelock Walk in London, the headquarters of Moo in London and Dolby in San Francisco. And if that isn’t impressive enough, he happens to be a very lovely chap too.

SuperLeeds is a 14metre wide kaleidoscopic pop of colour and will be installed across 12 glass panels at the centre of the footbridge overlooking the main entrance and the escalators. It will be seen from all over the station.  A playful design of bold lines and patterns emerging from different angles, make the artwork shift and change as you walk past it. SuperLeeds will make your day fizz with possibility and, for a moment at least, everything will be super.

SuperLeeds is the latest project in our commissioning programme that supports artists to create new work for the city. Previous Leeds Inspired commissions include the iconic Civic Hall light projections for Light Night; the Woolly Warmers concerts in Leeds Bus Station; and Slung Low’s fire-lit performance of The White Whale at New Dock.

SuperLeeds will be installed in the wee small hours of the night in late September but before then we will be releasing little glimpses of it over at @LeedsInspired.
